Afternoon pond report:

11/11/2012

Lots of migrating ducks on the pond.  Mostly mallards, a few wood ducks.  But what are those whistling noises?  I am not very good at identification, but my best guess is that they are pintails in eclipse plumage.  I think that's them in the third shot.

This report begins with me eradicating an invasive plant, the European water chestnut:

6/17/2012

Just back from an afternoon kayak trip.  Saw the wood duck and her nine ducklings; a great blue heron; a beaver munching on water lilies; dozens of red winged blackbirds; hundreds of blue dashers.  The ducklings didn't skitter into the blueberry bushes at the pond edge when I passed.  No tail slapping from the beaver.  An enormous bullfrog sat a foot from where I landed the kayak, unmoving.

Caught and released a yellow perch.  Yesterday a crappie and a small bass.  Removed a dozen or so invasive european water chestnuts.  Yesterday a pizza box and half a dozen bottles and cans.  And restored a small snapping turtle to the pond from the pool skimmer.

A lot of little wood ducks:

Came home to another mouse, first in a while.  Cold and clear night, dipper to the north, Orion to the southeast, Jupiter hanging below the moon.  As I reached the spot where I release the mice, a beaver slapped the pond.  A minute later, the ice made that whale-song sound.

Edging toward fifty degrees.  Rain and a little snow melt and the pond is high.  Pruning the suckers off the fruit trees, but I'm not sure they're fully dormant.  Today's report:

1/15/2012

Apart from an inch of slush last Thursday, still no snow to speak of.  Down to six degrees last night.  At high noon today a balmy twelve.  Today's report:

1/7/2012

Fifty-five degrees.  Not a usual winter on the pond.  Looks like this critter is snacking on a waterlily root, or maybe cattails.  Only a glimpse of his tail, but looks like this might be a muskrat, not a beaver?
